A True Cinematic Callback: John Wick 4 review
I was able to go see John Wick 4 last Saturday on my weekly date night with my wife. We have been major fans of the series since it came out in 2014 and own all 3 movies. We have been anticipating this movie for a while now and to say I was completely blown away is an understatement.
The overall theme of every critic’s review is summed up in one word…. “Bigger”. I tend to agree to a point, the film goes hard and fast, throwing everything at it in full scale. But I think that this view seems too generic of an explanation. If I was to explain this film, I would explain it as an “ode” to the action film genre and to the film industry itself.
John Wick pays homage to many action movies of old while also paving a new road for those in the future. From its soundtrack to the variety of locations, the storyline and the characters, John Wick 4 is a genuine masterpiece. It has almost everything you could ask for in a film. From the laughter to the gasps and ohs it really grabbed the audience and took them along for the ride.
The way this movie could switch from scene to scene was impeccable, a modern neon themed subway to a dark dingy cityscape, and then a beautiful gothic themed church filled with ambient candlelight, it transported you all over the globe without leaving your seat. As a photographer any expectation I had going into this movie was out done and I am completely thankful for it.
The acting was also superb. Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, and Lance Reddick still give their all in the film and the comradery they share is wonderful to watch. Both Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sanada were of course amazing in their scenes making you want to know more of their story. And of course, Bill Skarsgård played a great antagonist which comes to no surprise from the IT actor. then there are the newcomers Shamier Anderson and Rina Sawayama who were great in their respective roles and had great chemistry with their respected cast members.
Now I will admit that there are some inconsistencies in this film like Parabellum had, though I would say they are pretty minor. I mean it is almost 3 hours long and there is a lot of moving parts to this movie so, I expected there to be some short cut. Plus, most movie goers are there for the experience not to dissect the movie itself. And to a small degree it reminds me how legends of men are made in style.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for something fun to do this weekend or if you’re looking for a fun movie experience.
